A Month in the Making

I'm not really sure what the title of this post means, but it seemed appropriate. Sometimes the title just rolls from my mind, through my fingers, and onto the keyboard without making much sense.

Jason and I have been married for 4 months, 6 days, and about 45 minutes. We've experienced a lot of craziness in that amount of time. Just to give a brief overview, this is how our lives have looked over the past few months:

We thought we may be moving to a different city. We thought we might be moving to a different home in Birmingham. We thought we'd stay where we are. We really thought we might be moving to a different city. We decided to stay where we are. While we were figuring out where we were going to live, Jason changed jobs within the same company he already worked for, so now he works a full-time job and a more than part-time job as well (rather than two over-part-time jobs). We've been to six cities in four different states, not including our honeymoon. We've celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a New Year, all in different places.

It's been crazy.
Thanksgiving in Daytona Beach, FL (Jason's hometown)
A fun little trip to Disney World in Orlando
Christmas in Destin, FL with my family
Bringing in 2013 from our couch
We spent New Year's Day in Atlanta visiting the Coke Factory
We took a little weekend getaway to Nashville earlier in January
In the midst of all of the craziness, we've also been learning A LOT. We've been learning how to live together, how to like each other since we now live together :), how to show love to each other (even when it's hard), what our roles in marriage look like Biblically and what that means practically, how our roles within our families have changed, and how to just live life day-to-day as a married couple.

I'll be honest, it hasn't been all easy. In fact, the first three months were rough at times...not rough ALL the time, but at certain times. We've had handfuls of people tell us that the first year of marriage is the hardest. Jason asks me about once every two weeks why people say that to us so often, and my only real answer for him is because it must be true.

I will say this though...through the ups and downs, the arguments and sweet moments, the traveling and the nights at home, the craziness and the simple silences, I've learned to see God's grace so much clearer than I could before.

Since I've been a believer, I've prayed that someday my future husband (I didn't know Jason then) and I would quickly grow to be united mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Since we got married, I have gotten so frustrated because I just didn't see that happened at the beginning of our marriage and I didn't understand why God didn't want that for us.

But then, almost like it was overnight, things started to change. I honestly don't think that Jason or I have done anything to change, but God definitely opened our eyes and changed our hearts. Over the last month or so, I've began to see God's grace all over the place, or at least that's how it feels. Jason and I regularly pray that God would do something in us/in our marriage that is so insane and radical that it's evident that only He could accomplish it, and I truly believe that has happened...or is beginning to happen.

I know I've got a long way to go, and I pray that by the grace of God I'm given many many  more years to grow, but I believe that God has allowed certain opportunities and circumstances to come into our lives that have taught me about my role as a wife and how that affects every other facet of my life (my job, my family, my home, my friendships, etc.). The biggest thing that God has begun teaching me though, is that my identity and my role in this world doesn't start externally with my  marriage, it starts internally with my relationship with Him.

I guess the title to this post does make sense when I consider the past month or so. These last few weeks have been so sweet, not only as a newlywed, but as a believer. I hope that it's the foundation and the making of a life in which I am ever-growing in Him.

I've blogged to you...

Fun for Everyone

So the random, middle-of-the-week holiday has come and gone. Does anyone else feel like it should be a Monday?

Happy belated 4th of July to everyone! I hope you all had  a great day. I had the day off, but Jason had to work. That made for a productive holiday for me!

Since I'm on week two of Weight Watchers, I didn't partake in any super delicious eating festivities until the end of the evening.

Jason's mom is coming in town tomorrow, so I wanted to make sure that I'm showing off [what will be] our apartment looking the best it can. By about 2:00, I was very proud of my progress, so I headed to the pool for about an hour.

After the pool, I got my shower and just kind of enjoyed some down time as I waited for Jason to get off work.

This was my first year in Birmingham on the 4th of July. Usually, I'm out of town or I'm at home with my family in Destin...so I really didn't know what Alabamians do on this holiday.

We ended up meeting up with some friends. We went to dinner at Pinches Tacos, where I ate way too many chips. We walked to Steel City Pops after that, and then to Homewood Park to watch the fireworks. We had a bit of time to kill at the park before the fireworks, so here's how Jason used his time -

Then I decided to join him -

I found that it's not super lady like to swing in a dress.

All in all, this was a fantastic 4th of July...especially compared to last year when I couldn't turn my head to see the fireworks due to a crick in my neck :( Thankfully, I started seeing a chiropractor who has taken care of that.

'Tis the Season

Well, today marks the beginning of summertime in the South.

Growing up, Memorial Day marked the beginning of "the season" for everyone I knew. When you live in Destin, or any coastal town, Memorial Day marks the beginning of a three month long Black Friday.

So...in honor of my hometown and - well - we'll call it "heritage," here's my "Top 10 Summertime Favs"

10 - Less Traffic in the mornings
Source
As much as I absolutely loved growing up in Destin, I do not miss the summer traffic at all. Although I appreciated it, because I knew that it meant that people were supporting our economy, I have to say that sitting in traffic for hours a time just to get to work, the beach, the mall, or to a friend's house was not ideal. In Birmingham, summertime means less traffic. School is out and everyone goes to...well...Destin. Although my family may get annoyed at the hundreds of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee tags that they pass (or rather sit in traffic with) on the way to work, it means that I get to leave for work five minutes later than usual.

9 - Baseball

I don't get as much into the sport as I do into the atmosphere. I love all kinds of baseball in the summer - from tee ball to pro ball. I grew up going to the occasional Braves game with my family and during high school, I was privileged to get to see a couple different really cool games around the country. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the big leagues, but I also love going down to the ball park and just watching the kiddos play. Obviously, Jason and I don't get to do that because we don't have kiddos (or even really know any up here), but those are definitely some of my favorite memories from growing up.

Jason and I went to a Braves game last summer and it was really a blast. We're trying to plan a fun little trip back to Atlanta this summer to and go to a game.

8 - Parks and outdoor events

I'm a sucker for anything outdoors. I love concerts, movies, food, picnics, markets, garage sales, plays, and truly anything that consists of sitting outside in the warm air with a cool breeze.

Again, growing up in Destin, I feel like I've been conditioned for outdoor events since birth. My parents would always take up to events out at Seaside or Baytowne Wharf. It's kind of fun to get to do things that tourists do and then go home and sleep in your own bed at night.

Birmingham has fun things to do outdoors in the summer as well. I'm just learning about them as we go along. I guess that's part of the transition from living in Destin (either full-time or even just in the summertime) and living in Birmingham full-time. Jason and I enjoy outdoor activities, so if you hear of one nearby, let me know...we'll be there with shorts on!

7- Pool time
I didn't know this until I permanently moved to Birmingham last year, but most pools apparently don't open until Memorial Day weekend...or may a week or two before. I'm a big fan of clean pools. I love being able to lounge on a raft (like our friend Mr. Speedo Man) or lay out for a little while and then jump into a refreshingly cool pool.

6 - Weekend getaways

You're probably tired of hearing me say, "Growing up..."

But, growing up, my family and I would sometimes go stay on the beach for a weekend or some short amount of time. We knew a lot of people who would come to town or who owned houses/condos on the beach. Occasionally, we'd go stay out there. I loved doing that because I still got to hang out with my friends and go about my normal routine, but when I wanted to feel like I was on vacation, I could.
Source
Jason and I have a lot of little weekend getaways planned this summer. Starting this weekend, we're in Birmingham very little over the summer. I cannot wait for those Friday afternoons (and some Thursdays) when we get to jump in the car, turn on some good music, and drive out of town.

5 - New movies

There are not many things that can top the opening weekend of a movie you've been waiting to see for months. Many times, new movies that we've all been waiting for happen to open during the summer.

This year...here's what we're waiting for...
Source
We actually just discussed going to the midnight premier. We'll see if it happens or not.

4 - Sales

Summertime caterers quite specifically to the shopoholic. Now, I'm not sure that I fit quite into that category (especially since I've been "on my own"), but I do love a good sale. Lucky for girls like me, summertime also brings with it lots and lots of sales.

Need I keep going?

3 - Vacation days

Oh the joys of vacation days. I've learned very quickly that there are vacation days and then there are vacation days.

Vacation days are days that you're actually on vacation. Most of us go on a summer vacation every year or so, and vacation days laying out by the pool, laying on the beach, nice dinners out, shopping, and sight seeing are familiar to us.

Vacation days are days that you don't work, but you're not on a vacation. These are used for days when you don't go to work because you've got things to do (yucky errands) that can only be done between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
None of this...
Source
So far this year, I've only taken vacation days. I'm so excited about getting to take vacation days this summer!

2 - Wedding season

Summer is the seasons of weddings. This year there are quite a few that Jason and I will be attending as well as few that we can't make it to. Summer weddings have always been part of my life. If you've been on the beach in Destin/Pensacola/Panama City on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday evening I'm sure you've seen a wedding ceremony.
Source
I'm sincerely excited for all of my friends getting married this summer (and next) and I can't wait to become a married woman myself.

1 - No school

Unfortunately, this one only applies to my life indirectly these days. I was always a huge fan of summer vacation. One year I heard rumors about how our county (or state?) might be going to year-round school and I cried...literally...sat down and cried.
Source
Now, I'm no longer in school, but summer means that my family is way more available for me to hang out with them! Having two sisters in school, a mom who teaches, and a dad who is a principal has made me feel a weeeee bit left out this year :( Luckily, now that they're all going to be on summer vacation, I get LOTS of family time!

------------

I hope that each of you have a wonderful holiday weekend. I will be heading home to Destin as soon as work gets out today. For those of you traveling, be safe! For those of you taking a little staycation, enjoy your relaxation!

I'll be taking a break from rambling this weekend...but next week I want to know: What are your summertime favs?

A Picture-sque Weekend

Happy Monday everyone!

I'm actually really sad that the weekend is over. I took a half vacation day on Friday and I literally had the best weekend I've had in months.

Here's the weekend-in-review-via-pictures (I like combining words today):

Friday Jason and I went to see one of my best friends graduate from Samford's nursing school. I am so proud of her and it was also great to see my Little (little sister in Phi Mu)!
Yay MK!!!!
After graduation, Jason and I drove to Decatur, AL to see our friends Mark and Lindsay. Lindsay was on the Casting Crowns tour opening for the band while Mark, her husband, was also on the tour as an assistant tour manager. Jason and I became friends with them in the fall and we were excited to get to see Lindsay play at Soul Stock.
Lindsay McCaul - and yes, you should go buy her album, right now!
The event was sponsored by Show Hope, which is an organization that helps people adopt from overseas by raising money for grants and also raising awareness about orphan care. If you've ready my blog at all...you should know that I was totally excited about going to a Show Hope sponsored event (I cried like three times while we were there).

One of the cool things that is connected with Show Hope is called the Red Bus Project. It's literally a big red bus that goes around to college campuses and it's set up like a thrift store on the inside. It's super awesome and if you ever see this thing, you should definitely check it out!

After Lindsay played, Steven Curtis Chapman's sons played. I'd heard a lot about their band, Caleb, but I'd never seen them live before. They were great and Jason and I had a great time relaxing outside listening to their music.

After Caleb, there was a speaker from Show Hope who talked a lot about adoption and what the organization does. Jason and I listened for a little while, but then we got super hungry so we hit up the booth that was selling Chick-fil-A sandwiches. YUM! Jason also bought us matching-ish Show Hope t-shirts! Thanks Jason!
I promise the top shirt (Jason's) is blue, not pink.
The editing made both of these shirts look super girly.
The headliner for Soul Stock was Steven Curtis Chapman. He and his wife started Show Hope after adopting their three little girls from China about 12 years ago. It was only appropriate that that headlined for the first Show Hope sponsored event, right? I definitely re-lived ages 6-9 since he played a lot of his older music.

I loved everything about the event (except the bugs).

Saturday morning I woke up early, per my usual weekend routine. I waited to get a text from Jason saying that he was awake. We were able to go for a walk and do some work around his apartment and mine. I made us some lunch to save money. I hadn't been to the grocery store yet, so I literally threw together random things for myself, but it ended up being pretty good!

I had Italian seasoned green beans with shrimp and a baked sweet potato on the side.

Later that evening, Jason and I went to Chili's for dinner. I had the chicken fajitas with no sides while he went for the chicken crispers with corn on the cob and fries. We had a coupon for a free molten lava cake (hello splurge day), so we split that for dessert. It was good, but not sure if it was worth the calories (that sounds like crazy talk coming out of my mouth, but it's the truth...my how things have changed). Jason made me promise I'd never tell him how many calories are in that cake.
Saturday lunch, Sunday lunch, Saturday dinner
After Chili's we used another coupon and saw What to Expect when you're Expecting at the Edge Theater. It cost $6 for both of us to see a movie and for Jason to get popcorn. Now that's what I call a cheap date :)

The movie was actually really funny...and surprisingly clean. It has some language in it, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Sunday was the greatest day of all. We didn't do a whole lot, but it was great for some reason! I was actually able to sleep in (which is unusual for me), and then Jason and I went for another walk. After our walk, we made lunch and caught up on some TV shows. After TV/lunch time, we went to the pool for the first time this season (it was Jason's first time ever).

When we walked up to the pool, there was a man laying on a float in a teal speedo. Last year, my mom came up to stay with me on Memorial Day weekend and this same man was in the back of my apartment (I guess his backs up to mine) doing yoga in his chair. Well, yesterday Jason decided that it was too hot  to just sit in the chair, so he got in the pool (Jason, not speedo man...he was already lounging on his float). Speedo man started talking poor Jason's ears off. Turns out...he's from Miami and he's an alligator wrangler.
I couldn't help it. I had to take a picture.
I texted my mom while Jason was talking to the man and she said, "Well, it's official. Jason will literally talk to anyone!" So much truth.

After about an hour at the pool, we had to go back to my apartment to wait on the guy from Charter to come fix my internet...again. After he left, it was time to head to church.

Church was great, dinner was get (yummy yummy Thai food), and then we went to Jason's apartment to work on getting the pedestals off of our new washer and dryer.

They're so dusty, which wasn't a big deal. The pedestal came off of the dryer super easy. But the washer was a whole different story.

After about 45 minutes of trying to get the bolts out, Jason decided we'd go buy a better tool later. Poor guy, in the middle of all of that, he killed at least two spiders (probably more) and had to clean off all kinds of bugs and nasty stuff that we apparently purchased with the washer.

Overall, great weekend. I honestly didn't want it to end. But next week is a long weekend (WHOOHOO!!!) and I'm sure it will be great as well!

Enough of the rambling from me...what did YOU do this weekend?

Game Over

Today, I wish for a few more Saturdays, pretty please!

I have had such a productive day. And because of my productiveness, I haven't had time to snack or anything. Usually snacking (on unhealthy items) is my downfall over the weekend.

Last night I was invited to go out to dinner with a couple of friends from church. Jason and I are so blessed to be friends with such amazing people. Even though Jason wasn't there last night, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

We ate at one of my favorite local restaurants, Iguana Grill.  I guess I celebrated Cinco de Mayo a day early, oops! I didn't eat the best, but I did okay. I just had a cheese quesadilla with some guacamole. I waited until I got my food to even touch the chips (a little trick I learned when my mom did Weight Watchers back in the day). I also broke them in to smaller pieces instead of taking big bites out of them (another WW trick).

After dinner we went back to one of the couple's townhouse. They are actually in the adoption process so we got to hear all about that, hear the name they've picked out, and see a cute little baby fedora. I was so encouraged to hear all about the adoption process, but it also made me think that Jason and I could be doing the same thing in just a few short years!!

This morning I woke up at 7:00 like a normal work week morning. I was frustrated, but then I decided to read on my new Kindle. I finally finished the book that I've been trying to complete since Christmas (victory dance break).

While I was reading I decided that today would be a running day, so after finishing the book I hopped out of bed and made some peanut butter oatmeal with a nice cup of coffee.
Whole wheat oats with chocolate PB2 (it's all gone now)
A little while later I made my way to the gym. It felt good to hop on the treadmill and just listen to music for 45 minutes without having to think about anything.

When I got home I made some lunch. I fixed leftover taco bake, so nothing outstanding enough to take a picture of. I also started some laundry.

As I was finishing lunch, a technician from Charter showed up to finally fix our internet! Whoohoo!!

Next it was time to hit the grocery store. I usually can do a week's worth of grocery shopping in about 30-40 minutes for about $60-$70.  But, as of tomorrow afternoon Jason will be home full-time. I'm super excited, but I'm not really sure how to feed him, full-time.

Since our apartments are across the street from each other, it's not hard for us to eat dinner together each night. I have also been "strongly encouraging" him to start taking his lunch when he works at Apple, so I picked up some whole wheat bread and doubled my deli order.

Jason also sent me these lovely pictures from their tour ice cream social.

My response: Why do I need to see that?

The outcome at Publix was better than I thought it would be. I got enough food for both of us to last the week and it only took me one hour and $91. Not too shabby :)

As I was leaving Publix I began to make conversation with the man who walked my groceries to my car. I'm always reminded in times like those (times that can be sufficiently awkward) that I have such a opportunity to share God's love in day-to-day activities.

Tonight my plans are to clean the rest of my apartment (finish laundry, clean my bathroom, and vacuum the floors). I'm not sure how today turned into my cleaning day, but I guess I want Jason to want to stay in town when he gets home tomorrow and not long for his "luxurious bunk" on the tour bus.

Also, every time a tour ends they have a paper plate award ceremony. Today, Jason received the "Game Over Award". I wasn't sure what to think about that, but I've decided that it's good because he's mine and no one else's...

So...

Game. Over.

That's enough from me. I'll quit rambling and let you talk...

What did you do with your Saturday?

Let the countdown begin...

Jason proposing in the rain on Morris Ave.
So I must admit that I've been a little bit busy lately. Since the last time I've posted we've celebrated Christmas, brought in a new year, celebrated a couple of marketing holidays such as Valentine's Day, and we've dressed in all green for St. Patrick's day. Personally, I've celebrated all of these delightful holidays as well as been gone on a couple of mini vacations and the most exciting...I got engaged! Whoo!!!!

Today marks the six month countdown to our wedding! We'll be getting married on September 22, 2012...we'll say "I do" on September twenty-two! The last month and a half have been full of planning, creating, ordering, meeting, and re-planning. I've had a lot of people ask me almost sorrowfully, "How are the plans coming...?" and I guess I'm supposed to be really stressed out right now; but thankfully I'm not.

One of my sisters and I talked a bit this morning and I told her that I'm really not stressed with the plans and almost everything has been booked. Everything has really just come together easily. Carlee responded, "Well, that's how it's supposed to work. That's when you know it's right."

Obviously, I know that Jason and I are "right," and I've known that for a while, but hearing my sister say that our wedding and the little details are "right" seemed really encouraging to me.

As I write, I just glanced at the clock and realized that in exactly 6 months from now, I'll probably be saying my vows to my handsome groom. I cannot wait to be Mrs. Jessica Morales!
